Romania belongs to several migration corridors.
During the two major migration seasons of early spring and late summer one may observe the great diversity of species gathered in immense populations of thousands of specimens.
Birds have created the Danube Delta’s fame from the beginning of the 20th century. Ornithologists have identified more than 300 species catalogued in 5 main types:
europeen type (the white-tailed eagle, the nightingale, the seagull, the grey bald eagle, the white bald eagle)
mongolian type (the common pelican – the largest colony of Europe, the dalmatian pelican, the pygmy cormorant – more than half of the world’s population, the heron, the danubian falcon)
siberian type (the singing swan, the crane, the black duck),
chinese type (the egret, the mute swan, spoon bill),
arctic type (the red breasted goose).
Among this rich bird population there are several species protected by law and declared either white or polychromatic monuments:
White pelican (Pelecanus onocratulus)
Dalmatian pelican (Pelecanus crispus )
Great white egret (Egretta alba)
Little egret (Egretta garzetta)
White-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla)
Black winged stilt (Himantopus himantopus )
Ruddy shelduck (Tadorna ferruginea)
Red-breasted goose (Branta ruficollis)
